FULL DISCLOSURE: I no longer use FloDesk myself, BUT this post is still full of helpful insights for those who are interested. Read this post if you want to find out why I left FloDesk and read this one too if you want to compare 5 of the most popular options.

Are you a new business owner that’s trying to pick an email marketing app from the MYRIAD of options? Been there!

I’ve already talked about why I switched to FloDesk from MailerLite over here, but those are still my two favorite options in the affordable-and-easy-to-use category so check out that post if you still need some help deciding & want something designer-friendly.

A lot of people seem to believe that MailChimp is the only thing that works with Squarespace, because it’s actually integrated into the platform as one of the default options. It’s a logical conclusion to make, but it’s not true.

You can use any email marketing platform with Squarespace because all of them give you a snippet of code to embed their sign-up forms anywhere on your site, or simply link to a full-page sign-up form if they offer that as an option (FloDesk & MailerLite both do).

But I’m here today to discuss what happens AFTER the sign-up, in FloDesk specifically. So make sure you read this post if you’re dying to learn more about how to integrate and use FloDesk with Squarespace.

Once you have FloDesk set up and people start signing up, what happens with those subscribers? How do you segment them so you can trigger workflows (automations)?

It’s actually really simple, which is one of the many reasons I 🖤 FloDesk!

    Part 1 of 2:

    Segments & Workflows in FloDesk

    What is a segment?

This is way simpler than you might think! You can actually have any subscriber in multiple segments or just one –whatever makes the most sense for your list organization.

Segmenting is just FloDesk’s term for grouping, categorizing, or tagging, basically. Tagging a subscriber with a “Segment” is basically a way for you to pick & choose which groups of subscribers get what emails & when once you’re ready to start sending content to those subscribers.

You can get however complex you want with segmenting, but what I do is simply tag a subscriber with a “Segment” related to the freebie that was signed up for.

In the example below, you can see a list of subscribers inside a “Notion Template” segment. Anyone in this list has a “Notion Template” segment tagged to their subscriber profile because they signed up for that freebie.

You’ll notice everyone is also in a segment titled “All” which is used to trigger the Welcome series workflow –more on that in a second. Any other segments my subscribers are tagged with will also show up site-wide and since they’re color-coded, you can see at a glance who is in what category!

How to assign segments to subscribers on autopilot

When you create forms in FloDesk, there are some settings to choose before you Publish the form. In there, you can choose which segment or segments to apply to the subscribers who signup using this form. At most, I only have 2 segments applied to each form: the “All” segment, and one specific to the freebie.

    Here’s what this looks like:

As soon as you publish the form, anyone who subscribes using that form will be added to whatever segments you added to it during setup –automatically! No manual assigning required, but of course you can do that too, if you want.

Thank you FloDesk for keeping things simple! 😁
